Thomas, --?--

Shoeing Smith "Old Joe," right, of South Melbourne, Victoria, was a member of the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade, 9th Battery, in the Australian Imperial Force. Here he's joined by three Tasmanians: Driver Robert Couston Wright, left, of South Burnie, Farrier Sgt. Alfred John Barnett of Mowbray and Shoeing Smith Cpl. Henry "Harry" Alphonsus Lane of Launceston.

Twenty-nine-year-old Joseph, who was born in Bingley, Yorkshire, England, moved to Australia about 1909. He enlisted on Aug. 27, 1914, and his unit departed Hobart, Tasmania on Oct. 20, aboard the transport A2 Geelong. He died a few months after the war ended.

The 3rd Artillery Brigade saw action on the Egyptian, Sinai, Gallipoli, and Western fronts.
