THE CHARLES O. PARMLEY FAMILY
James, Robert, John, Giles, Hiel, Nathaniel, Nathaniel, John, John

Charles (1862-1937) and his family stood before the camera about 1910 or '11 at their home just west of Grinnell, Iowa, between Sections 17 and 18 of Grant Township, Poweshiek County, for this classic Midwestern portrait. About the turn of the 20th century, and for the next two decades or so, photographers roamed the countryside for this typical shot of the farmer and his family lined up in front of their home. The color photo at the right, taken in 1982, shows that little more than the side porch and the chimneys have really changed.

At left is a detail of the family from the top photo: Charles, left, baby Morris/Maurice (1908-1958),
Violet (1898- ? ), Isabel "Belle" (1869-1952),
Clara (1901-1974), and Wesley (1892-1958).

The oldest child, Leila (1890-1955), may have moved
away by this date.
